As the former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter used to live in the White House. Unfortunately, gone are the days that the now-39-year-old politician slash philanthropist lives a grandiose life and is now living in a much modest home.

Carter’s life today is pretty typical—without any touch of being grand onto it. According to reports, he now stays in a ranch house that he built on his own in 1961—no investments needed. It’s a two-bedroom house, which is said to be worth $167,000, much cheaper than the armored Secret Service vehicles parked outside the door to look after him. As evidence of his frugal life, Carter spends the weekend dining with his neighbors using paper plates and drinking cheap wine. He also buys his clothes from a Dollar General store while he and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, make their own yogurt. This may be the simple life Carter has been dreaming of to have.
