Donald Edward Newhouse was born in 1929. Donald’s father, Samuel Irving Newhouse, Sr, was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and began the family media business. His mother, Mitzi Epstein, was an art of patron and philanthropist who grew up in an upper-middle-class family on the Upper West Side and was the daughter of a silk tie importer.

After his father’s passing, Donald and his brother, also named Samuel, took control of the S.I media empire and Advance Publications, which owns Conde Nast, the magazine that Samuel presides over, and newspapers, cable televisions, and some other entertainment outlets.
